This clownfish is often confused with A. frenatus, also commonly called a tomato clown. It is generally a darker orange, and has a less well-formed border on the white stripe.

In the wild they are usually found in Entacmaea quadricolor (bubble-tip anemones), sometimes in Heteractis crispa (Pacific long tentacled anemone), and only rarely in Heteractis magnifica (ritteri or malu anemone). In captivity they will bond with most large anemones from the Pacific ocean.
