NFC: Fw: [Corps] Corps Reform Update

CASE STUDY: OCEAN PINES SALT MARSH RESTORATION

The Corps’ Baltimore District plans to work state and local officials to
restore 6.3 acres of salt marsh in Maryland’s coastal bays. The project
will
remove a common invasive plant and re-establish salt marsh grasses.

SNAKE RIVER DEIS RELEASED
Two appendixes to the a Corps’ DEIS on Snake River salmon conclude that
removal of four Snake Rivers dams would save endangered fall chinook and
steelhead runs, and help save spring/summer chinook runs. But, the Corps’
economic analysis underestimates the recreation benefits of dam removal
and
exaggerates the costs.

Public
hearings will be held over the next few months and comments must be
submitted by March 31. To view the report, go to:

SPRING RISE SOUGHT FOR THE MISSOURI

The Corps will soon decide whether to reform Missouri River dam
operations
to implement a “spring rise” to trigger fish reproduction and build
sandbars
for nesting shorebirds. Five Senators and more 20 conservation groups
have
also urged the Corps to suspend summer barge navigation to aid
recreation.
