THE QUESTION OF ANIMAL RIGHTS - The April 1995 Fisheries
contained an essay by Phil Pister of the Desert Fishes
Council who presents a very eloquent and convincing view
point on The Rights of Species and Ecosystems, and also,
clearly delineates the very different goals of animal rights
activists and conservation biologists. The basic premise of
the essay is very simple: All creatures have a right to
continue their evolutionary progression, and humans have no
right to keep them from doing so. Pister cites examples
where this basic principle was put to the test and often
resolved in the favor of beleaguered species. This
enlightening masterpiece definitely should be read and
pondered in its entirety!
