NFC: Fw: [Updates] Action Alert -- Help Protect Funding for Rivers!

ATTENTION RIVER CONSERVATIONISTS AND OUTDOOR ACTIVISTS! CONGRESS IS
POISED
TO SLASH FUNDING FOR MANY PROGRAMS ESSENTIAL TO THE HEALTH OF OUR
NATION'S
RIVERS! PLEASE CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES AND URGE THEM NOT TO PARALYZE
THESE
IMPORTANT INITIATIVES!

Constrained by spending caps, congressional appropriators have proposed
funding levels for many river conservation and restoration programs that
are
unacceptably low, rolling some initiatives back to budget levels of ten
to
twenty years ago. Among the programs facing significant cuts are those
highlighted in the River Budget: National Priorities for Local River
Conservation in FY'00. [For a copy of the River Budget for FY'00, please
visit http://www.amrivers.org/rbudget.html or contact Suzy McDowell at
877-347-7550 or smcdowell at amrivers_org.]

The numbers in the Senate Appropriations bills that have been approved by
floor vote are frightening. For example, the Senate would provide the
Missouri River Mitigation Program with only $5 million and the
Environmental
Management Program with just $16 million. American Rivers recommended $10
million and $25 million for these programs respectively. To see a
comparison
of the budget requests for River Budget programs for FY'00 from American
Rivers, the Clinton Administration, and the Senate, visit
http://www.amrivers.org/rbudget.html or contact Suzy McDowell at
smcdowell at amrivers_org.

We need your help show the members of the House Appropriations Committees
that people across the United States care about river-related programs
and
the significant benefits they provide us all.

PLEASE CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES TODAY AND URGE THEM TO ADEQUATELY FUND
THE
PROGRAMS HIGHLIGHTED IN THE RIVER BUDGET FOR FY'00. PLEASE ALSO CALL THE
CHAIRS AND RANKING MINORITY MEMBERS ON THE HOUSE APPROPRIATIONS
SUBCOMMITTEES ON AGRICULTURE, ENERGY & WATER DEVELOPMENT, AND INTERIOR.
Subcommittee contact information is listed below.

CALL TODAY! THE HOUSE APPROPRIATIONS SUBCOMMITTEES COULD MARK UP THE
BILLS
AS EARLY AS JUNE 29.
