Re: NFC: NFC "sanctions" and our detractors...

Ray,
While everyone's entitled to an opinion, an opinion with nothing to back
it up is seldom worth the scrap its printed on.
Let me put it this way... where's the harm in making money from removing
exotics (I assume thats the program you speak of)... as long as that
money's going to removing exotics and helping the ERP and NFC allaround?
The cost of the program has to be covered. Thats that. If we don't
cover it, it won't happen -- and no one wants that. So.. whats wrong with
using it to cover a few other programs as well, that wouldn't happen
without it? Maybe we can't get funding to buy x acres of land around
stream X to help protect it. If we don't have some profitable aspect to
the org, we can't do it. Donations can only go so far, and I'd hate to
(to be bluntly honest) chip money out of my pocket regularly. LIke anyone
else, I'm not rich. I can't afford to help buy stream X. If you can,
good for you.
Most conservation orgs. have profit making ventues. They sell t-shirts,
magazines, etc. This money goes to cover their other ventures. We have
another good we can hawk, to help fund... exotics. People want them.
They buy them -- whether their exotics or fished from central america.
Wheres the harm?
My last point... in a way, isn't this doubly preserving? We remove the
fish from, say, Florida. Thats one less acre of land that has to be
converted to tropic fish farms, or one less fish that has to be removed
from its own habit. we remove the unwanted fish from Florida, and they
get to stay in Central America, Africa, wherever.
