I've heard that one before.  Absolutely true story follows:

At the last firm I worked for, I reported directly to the owner and president.
We went pheasant hunting every year along with executives of a large company
he had been  executive vice-president of prior to buying his own company.  The
owner of that firm as well as all of the executives were avid pheasant
hunters.  Since there was a bunch of them, they always split up in to
different groups.  After many years, he noticed that he had never hunted with
the president of the firm even though he had tried to several times.  When he
finally asked why that was, the president said that was one way vice-
presidents became presidents.  IMO, he knew him real well.
