THE BASS ANGLERS SPORTSMAN SOCIETY (B.A.S.S.)


All members of the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.) or any
B.A.S.S. state federation or B.A.S.S. club should be aware that a
lawsuit is pending in the United States District Court for the Middle
District of Alabama concerning the ownership of B.A.S.S.


In 1992 two life members of B.A.S.S. brought a lawsuit in the United
States District Court for Kansas alleging that B.A.S.S. was a
conservation/fishing association belonging to its members, but that the
founder of B.A.S.S. (Ray Scott) and the current operators of B.A.S.S.
(B.A.S.S, Inc., Helen Sevier, Karl Dabbs, James Davis and Jemison
Investment Company) had ***TAKEN ALL THE ASSETS*** that legally belong
to the members.  They asked the court to return B.A.S.S. and its assets
to the control of the members so they can use the assets to meet the
original founding purposes of B.A.S.S., which was to operate a
conservation/fishing society.  The lawsuit was later transferred to the
Alabama federal court.


The defendants (B.A.S.S., Inc., Scott, Sevier, Dabbs, Davis and
Jemison) have argued that B.A.S.S. never was started, operated or
intended to be a conservation/fishing society but was simply Ray
Scott's own business that he started in 1968 and later sold to the
other defendants in 1986.  The defendants take the position that
B.A.S.S. is not a true society which is owned by the members or gives
the members any legal rights of members traditionally recognized by the
law.  Essentially, the defendants have argued that B.A.S.S. is really a
business that masquerades as a society set up to make a profit off its
"members", who are really nothing more than customers.
