They are two different species. As usual, I don't really have the best
references at hand, but "How to Know the Freshwater Fishes" indicates 10
dorsal spines and a black blotch at the front of the dorsal in chaetodon and
9 spines and no blotch in obesus. I do remember collecting specimens in the
Great Dismal Swamp of Virginia that were difficult to assign to either
species, but I don't think that is always the case. E. chaetodon is the
blackbanded and obesus is the banded.
