The silicone NEEDS to be flexible.  That keeps the glass from 
cracking, or the joint from popping.  I have done this many, MANY 
times.  I daresay (but humbly!) I am an expert at tank 
repair/construction.  Do what I tell you, son!  One day you'll thank 
me for it.
