Hi Klaus.

I have the same difficulty with hooking sunfish.  Only the males remain
over the nests in shallow water near shore.  They bite aggressively in
defense of the nest and are easily hooked.  Try fishing in other areas
nearby the nest site for the females.

I was in Tenessee over the weekend and hooked quite a few brilliant, male L
marginatus in the same way.
