Terry: I have had as many as 80+ H. formosa in my 2.5 gallon tank. Voracious eaters of newly hatched brine shrimp, daphnia, flake, etc.

Suggest that if you have a fry eater, it is probably due to stress and hunger. I would isolate the male, give lots of quality food and do a followup "test" with one or two newly delivered fry. If he again eats them, you may want to consider eliminating him and his behavior from your breeding program by either isolating the male and only allowing him to contact females that need fertilization, or even better, to let only males that do not molest fry to breed. This avoids the bad actor from developing entrenched counter-productive behavior patterns and also avoids the opportunity for him to teach the other fish and surviving fry that baby H. formosa are good to eat. Fish have the ability to learn from the behavior of other fish in their environment and it is NOT a good idea to retain bad examples. I have read where some guppy breeders have their females deliver in small plastic fish bowls without any fry cover at all. Females which chase fry are eliminated to ensure that al!
!
l females and their fry do not develop bad habits that are counter-productive to the breeding program.

One of the earliest Christian symbols was the fish
(Greek: icthys, which was an abbreviation for the Greek
words in the phrase: Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior).
Thus, disciples could identify each other by their use
of the fish symbol, which continues to be used today.

Jonah was swallowed by a huge fish and remained
within it for three days and three nights. Afterwards,
he was "vomited" (literal translation) onto the beach
to go and minister to the people of Ninevah (Jonah 2:1-11).
While we often find references in aquarium books
concerning the first instances of fishkeeping
by humans, this appears to be the first instance
of humankeeping by a fish!

Robert,

The H. formosa arrived about three hours ago and they are all happily (?)
swimming around in their new home. Have already had two fry (well, not me
personally, but you get the idea!).

Which brings me to my question: everything I read on H. formosa indicated
that adults eating the fry was not a problem. However, I have one very
active little male that consumed one fry in the twinkling of an eye, and
chased the other back into the heavy Java Moss. Do you reckon this is a
result of the stress of shipping? Can I anticipate that he will settle down
and become a more typical papa...or should I move him to another tank?

Thanks again.

Terry
