According to _Handbook of Darters_ by Dr. Lawrence M. Page:

Mud Darter = Etheostoma asprigene, a member of subgenus Oligocephalus as
are the Orangethroat Darter (E. spectabile) and the Rainbow Darter (E.
caeruleum).
