INFORMATION REQUESTS OR REQUESTS FOR ASSISTANCE
**********************************************************
ASSISTANCE NEEDED FOR GREEN GOODEIDS-EXTINCT IN THE WILD.
Ray Ravary, 1940 Whittier, Ypsilanti, MI, 48197-1729.
Telephone #: (734) 483-2360. Email: rravary at provide_net.
I am a past member of NANFA. I had to suspend my membership due to
finances(a bloody divorce and three youngsters I want to do right by). A
year ago I bought some Green Goodieds (Xenoophorus captivus), and have
had some sucess in breeding them. These fish are supposedly extinct in
the wild, and species maintanence is very important. I would like to see
if you would allow me to run an ad so we can spread this species about
the country, minimizing the chance of its disappearance. The fish was
collected in Mexico by Professor Miller of the University of Michigan
(yes, that Dr. Miller) in the 1960's. It is found in the Detroit area
due to the efforts of Jim Langhammer and the Belle Isle Aquarium. While
it isn't rampant in the Detroit area, it pops up now and then at a club
auction. I would be glad to trade for other fish or to donate to any
scientific or educational institution for shipping expenses. (03/98)

INTERESTED IN FRESHWATER INVERTEBRATES? CHECK THIS OUT!
Michael Hissom, 2124 Van Buren St., Wilmington NC 28401
Telephone#: 901-763-0350. Email: Moontanman at aol_com.
I would like to start a cause. That cause is freshwater invertebrates.
Although I know this organization is devoted to fresh water fish, I
think it is time we considered freshwater inverts. I have obtained from
one of our members some dwarf crayfish. I know that there are gammaris,
more than an inch long, in North America. No doubt there are many more
large versions of what we normally only see as fish food. I keep a 125
gallon with only small fish, cardinals, glass cats, a local swamp
darter, and least killifish. I know in the tropics there are seed shrimp
1" long, clams that attach to wood and other interesting species. I
think we as a group should start looking for those large inverts, and if
you know a collector or wholesaler, ask them to send these large inverts
in along with their fish shipments. An aquarium that incorporates
plants, fish, inverts and great decorations would be much more
interesting. I honestly think if we we really took the time this could
do the same thing that the reef aquarium has done for marine fish. BTW,
there are even fresh water sponges. There are lots of invertebrates out
there if we look, and if we find them it could change the face of our
hobby. I have a 75 gallon tank in my greenhouse that has two cypress
trees growing in it! I trim them back a litle from time to time - the
tank also has cattails and horsetails in it. You don't have to go the
ordinary way, let's start a trend towards freshwater tanks with inverts.
PS: I forgot to mention that there is a fresh water horseshoe crab!
Wouldn't you love to hold of one of those crabs! I could go on and on
but you have the gist of my message. Contact me! (5/98)

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT WILDLIFE REFUGE FOR NATIVE FISH DISPLAY
WANTED: Volunteers to help maintain native fish exhibit at wildlife
refuge (Bombay Hook NWR) near Dover, Delaware. Level of effort is
once a month: a few hours to clean tank, evaluate fish health and
water conditions, work with refuge staff to develop fish exhibits. If
interested, please call volunteer/NANFA member Shireen Gonzaga
(Baltimore/410-377-2619(h), 410-338-4412(w)), or speak to refuge
naturalists Marian Pohlman or Tina Watson (302-653-6872).
P.S.: I volunteer at the refuge mentioned in the advertisement. We
really need more help with maintaining the current 60g fish tank,
and may set up a second tank soon. These tanks feature fish found
on the refuge. Currently we have pumpkinseed, banded killifish,
American Eel, and Mummichog. We'll soon be collecting more species
like Sheepshead Minnow, E. Mudminnow, Bluegill, Banded Sunfish,
Brown Bullhead, and some inverts. Right now, I'm the only refuge
volunteer who knows fishkeeping, so getting a couple
of aquarists on-board, especially some NANFA members, would be a
welcome relief. (5/98)
