I have seen that type of striking,but with the gills open and weapons used
on rocks . I figured sharpening action or agressive show. This striking
involves all of the body.

I had a sneaking suspicion some of my fish were trying to dislodge food
critters because after striking, they would eyball the spot. It could be
some sort of scratching behaviour though.
