NFC: heating cables

If the goal is to warm the substrate, then the idea of using a heating pad
is an excellent one because a good heater cable will make your wallet
ache. However, heating pads won't generate convection
currents. Generating convection currents is the whole purpose of a heating
cable. The idea is that the currents bring nutrients into the substrate
where they are bound and made available to plant roots. Cables are useless
unless setup properly and complimented by laterite clay in the gravel and a
comprehensive fertilizer regimen.

When it comes to heating cables, George Booth is the most experienced guy I
know. If you're interested, check out what he has to say at
http://www.frii.com/~booth/AquaticConcepts/ .

JiM: Sorry M3 was a bust...try Aquarium Landscapes at
http://www.fishvet.com/landscape/equip_p3.html . I haven't heard much on
their cables, but it's worth a look. You might be able to find used cables
on Aquabid too ( http://www.aquabid.com ). Good luck.

adios,
Chuck
