IMHO heater cables are a waste of big money. I know some people swear by
them, but   I also know a ton of people will awesome planted tanks that do
not have them. It is also very unnatural. The substrate in nature is the
coldest not the warmest part of any body of water, unless you are in Yellow
Stone or some other Geo-Thremal area. If you really want to heat your
substrate than get an under tank heating pad like they sell for reptiles. It
will save you quite a bit of money.
