Dear members and friends of Save Our Springs,

Below is a modified copy of a letter I am mailing to Seminole County
today
concerning the preservation of Starbuck Springs, the last spring up for
grabs
in the Wekiva Basin. It is now changed to the format of a petition, and
phone
numbers of various parties have been removed . We must not allow this
spring
to be swallowed up by the nearby gated community, which has already
degraded
and altered Sanlando and Palm Springs, the other two springs in that
area.
Please cut and paste, add your name and city to the petition, and then
email
it to someone else. It would look good for as many Floridians as possible

sign this, but others are also welcome too. After 1,000 people, please
mail
back to Brad, Vice President of Save Our Springs, at,
Visigoth9 at aol_com, and I will present this petition to the County
Commissioners and Committee of Natural Lands. Brad

Petition to Preserve Starbuck Springs:

To: Natural Lands Committee;
County Commissioners of
Seminole County, FL

We the undersigned wish to encourage the Seminole County Natural Lands
Committee to consider the purchase of Starbuck Springs(formerly known as
Sheppard Springs) for the purpose of preserving it from the harm of
development , and, to furthermore set it aside as a nature preserve or
other
natural area of limited public recreation.

As you know, Starbuck Springs is the last spring of the Little Wekiva and

Wekiva Rivers which is available for purchase. The property, according to
the
owners, is comprised of 28-30 acres of land; one side of which is very
close
to Markham Woods Road. Other than Wekiwa Springs and Rock Springs, all of
the
other springs which are the sources of water for the Scenic National
Waterway, the Wekiva River, have been enclosed in gated communities and
are
slowly being destroyed by abuses ranging from recreational overuse,
pollution, fertilizer, pesticide and chemical run-off from residences and

paved roads, excess nutrients and fecal coliform from septic and sewage
systems, and, neglect.

In addition, Starbuck Springs, which is the most pristine spring
remaining in
the Little Wekiva system, contributes 7-9 million gallons per day of
clean
water into the Little Wekiva River, which is already suffering from the
reduced flows of Sanlando and Palm Springs; over development;
over-sedimentation of the river bed, and past modifications of the rivers

course over the last few decades. Without adequate protection, Starbuck
will
also be developed and the local freshwater ecosystems will suffer further

damage to their overall health and ability to support various endangered,

protected, and other indigenous wildlife.

It is the opinion of Save Our Springs, Inc., and, other individuals
signed
below, that it is of the utmost importance for Seminole County not to let

this last spring that can still be saved be lost to asphalt, bulldozers,
concrete, and the abuses of becoming an urban housing development. Mr.
and
Mrs. Barker, the owners of the property met with Save Our Springs at
Starbuck
last week. They agreed that this property should be preserved and agreed
to
work with the County, if the County would be willing to help preserve
this
pristine property for future generations to enjoy.

Thank you for your thoughtful consideration in this matter.

Sincerely,

Brad Willis, Vice President
for: Terri Wolfe, President Save Our Springs, Inc.
