2. Public Input Requested on the Key West Marine Park :
Temporary floats mark the boundaries of the proposed Key West
Marine Park.

Key West is collaborating with the City of Key West to create a
shoreline protected area on the oceanside of Key West that will
include no-motor swim areas and access lanes for existing
watersports operators.
The swim areas for the Key West Marine Park have been
temporarily marked. Reef Relief is seeking public comments
regarding the proposed boundaries. Written comments or
suggestions regarding the swim areas should be sent to
reef at bellsouth_net. or write to Reef Relief, P.O. Box 430, Key
West, Fl. 33041. fax (305) 293-9515.

The swim areas in the Key West Marine Park are designed to
protect swimmers from motorized vessels. Two marked entry
lanes allow vessels to approach the shoreline at the Wyndam
Casa Marina Resort pier and near the Atlantic Shores Resort
pier. The flow of vessel traffic near the swim areas has
influenced the distance that the swim area extends offshore. The
White Street Pier and the Higgs Beach Pier keep vessels
approaching from the east at least 600 feet from the shoreline.
The Duval Street Pier swim area is 400 feet from the shoreline
because vessels approaching from this direction are generally
closer to shore. On the inside of each entry lane, there is
adequate room for small vessels to anchor close to shore.

This project is designed to increase protection for the nearshore
waters of Key West. Reef Relief will install reef habitats to
accrete coral growth in the swim-only areas. This area is a
breeding ground and juvenile nurseries for myriad species that
later migrate to the reef. In addition, the park will help focus on
the need to improve stormwater treatment throughout Key West.
At the current time, stormwater drains directly into the proposed
park boundaries.

Marine Park, please go to our web
