NFC: corp. to pay $14.2 million and plead guilty for White River, Indiana fish kill

Below is link to full newspaper article and first lines. I will post updates
as they appear.

On a personal opinion note, I have mixed emotions. I am glad for what
penalties are there and it appears a real improvement over other events in
Indiana. On the other hand, I see no mention of jail time for the violators,
which I think would be _the_ serious deterrent.

Guide to pay $14.2 million for fish kill

Anderson company agrees to plead guilty to violating Clean Water Act in
connection with White River disaster.

STAFF AND WIRE REPORT
June 18, 2001

Guide Corp. will pay $14.2 million and plead guilty to seven counts of
violating the Clean Water Act to settle criminal charges and state and
federal lawsuits in connection with a massive fish kill on the White River.

The terms of the plea agreement, if accepted by a federal judge, would result
in a $1.96 million fine, the largest ever imposed for an environmental crime
in the Southern District of Indiana, U.S. Attorney Timothy Morrison said.

Guide also would forfeit $1.96 million in one of the first cases ever in the
nation to include the use of forfeited assets to fight environmental crime,
Morrison said
