Kris,

What you're describing is called a veggie filter. There are various plans
for such available on the Web. Do a search on google or some similar search
engine with the key words: veggie filter aquarium.

There's also a very good book by Diana Walstad called Ecology of the Planted
Aquarium. It's about using natural filtration capacity of plants to do all
the filtering needed in an aquarium.
