Well everyone can disagree, Copernicus had the same
problem :-)
Actually I have done it for longer then I want to
figure up, and had a couple big HOB also, this on a
75gal marine. Maintained excellent nitrite/nitrate
numbers right along.
Once the bio population is established it will
maintain
itself at its own stable level.
I have never seen serious documentation on either
'side' but I am very comfortable with having both
kinds of filtration on larger tanks.
