In my tanks, they're ALL dwarf crawdads if they're 3/4" (2 cm) or less when I put 'em in. 

At 1½" inches (+/- 4cm), I say "whoops, guess that's not a dwarf after all," and I scoop 'em back out. (Easier said than done in a well-planted tank of course, everyone but me generally finds this part of the process to be very amusing.)
