NFC: Treating new arrivals
Some of you have raised questions in the past about what to do
about newly captured fishes which turn white and die. What they
do at the museum here is dose the new arrivals with 36 mg/gal of
nitrofurazone. A single treatment does the trick, and they report
markedly reduced mortality due to capture stress. Since the
standard aquarium dose is something like 50 mg/gal, you could
use this dosage safely as well, and more conveniently due to the
size of the OTC capsules (usually 250 or 500 mg).
Nitrofurazone is available at many pet stores. It is also one of the
components of Furan2.
