FLORIDIANS -- HELP RESTORE THE OCKLAWAHA RIVER!
HELP RESTORE THE OCKLAWAHA RIVER!
URGE GOVERNOR BUSH TO SUPPORT BREACHING RODMAN DAM!
TIME IS RUNNING OUT – JULY 1 DEADLINE!
Florida Governor Jeb Bush (R) must decide whether the
Rodman Dam on the Ocklawaha River stays or goes by July 1,
2000, the expiration date of the federal permit the dam
must have to remain in the Ocala National Forest. As
mandated by the Forest Service, Florida must submit an
Environmental Impact Statement and its “long-term” plans
for the Rodman Dam by the July 1 deadline.
Although the Florida Department of Environmental Protection
(DEP) has applied to the US Army Corps of Engineers and St.
Johns River Water Management District for permits to breach
the dam and restore the Ocklawaha River forest floodplain,
Governor Bush has recently stated that he has not yet made
up his mind about the dam. WE NEED THE GOVERNOR’S SUPPORT
FOR THE OCKLAWAHA RIVER RESTORATION PROJECT TO MOVE
FORWARD!
WE NEED YOUR HELP TODAY! Please email or fax a letter
urging Governor Bush to support breaching the Rodman Dam by
June 30. Below is a copy of a letter written from
information provided by Florida Defenders of the
Environment that covers the main points of why the Rodman
Dam should be breached. Please send the letter to Governor
Bush and Florida DEP Secretary David Struhs TODAY.
