G'day folks

Desert Springs Action Committee [DSAC]

Calling all volunteers and guests Virgin River / Beaver Dam Wash / Preston
Expedition April 2000

DESERT SPRINGS ACTION COMMITTEE - ALL ARE WELCOMED - April 28-30, 2000

The Desert Springs Action Committee is happy to announce the arrangements
for our next trip. Peter Unmack and Jim Heinrich have finalized plans for a
productive learning and constructive "Desert Happening". The April trip is
authorized and under the supervision of the Nevada Division of Wildlife.
Various projects will be conducted under the tutelage of agency biologist,
Jim Heinrich, who wil be on site to oversee proper completion of our
assigned tasks. The weekend's work will include: sampling fishes in the
Virgin River at Mesquite to look for any signs of reproduction in the
reintroduced woundfin (Plagoptreus argentissimuss) there; sampling of upper
Beaver Dam Wash looking for spikedace (Lepidomeda mollispinus); and heading
back via Preston to remove guppies from Nicholas Spring.

Members are reminded that we are guests at the various localities and all
rules are to be strictly observed. The Desert Springs Action Committee will
rendezvous at 10:00 a.m., April 28th at the front of the Virgin River Casino
in Mesquite (they have cheap room rates Thursday nights too). Friday night
will be spent at Beaver Dam State Park (Schroeder Reservoir). Directions
are
as follows:

1) FROM Las Vegas:

North on 93 to Caliente, Nevada, then take signs to Beaver Dam State Park
(if you get to Panaca you missed the park turn-off, and watch carefully
for signs once you get on the dirt road!) The turn-off from the paved
road is about mid-way between Caliente and Panaca, it's about 20 miles of
fairly good dirt road to the Park! We will be meeting at the primitive
camp sites below the reservoir, two-wheel drive cars should be able to
make it although it may be a little hairy!

2) FROM Mesquite:

Take Interstate 15 to Littlefield, Arizona, and then the road (my map
says Hwy 18) through Shivwitts, Veyo, Central, Enterprize. At this point
you can go via Panaca, but there is a turn-off/shortcut that will take a
dirt road straight to Beaver Dam State Park. Roads are usually good,
except after lots of rain.

Saturday night we will move on towards Preston to undertake guppy removal
Sunday morning. Some folks usually stay in Ely, others normally camp
locally.

There will be some equipment provided for cooking meals, please bring
complimentary supplies to share and if needed for special dietary concerns.
We
plan on having a group meal Friday evening, otherwise folks should be self
sufficient food wise. This area is remote and adequate individual camping
gear will be needed to facilitate your stay and enjoyment.

Please email/call if you would like to attend this service trip and great
nature trek. Car pools may be available with advance planning. Direct
