NFC: Re: FW: Vox -- Species Names

Similarly, a British entomologist gave us the genus Ochisme, with such
species in it as Ochisme polychisme, Ochisme dolichisme, Ochisme
peggichisme. Another genus erected to honor Harrison G. Dyar, an
entomologist, is carrying the delightful moniker, Dyaria.

                            Species Names

Did you ever wonder where those Latin names for animals come from?
Well, the first person to describe a species, genus, etc. has the
privilege of creating its name. And they have much freedom in the
name they propose.

One famous 19th century researcher, Leach, came up with a system which
subsequent systematicians love to duplicate. He named several genera
of Isopoda as Cirolana, Conilera, Nerocila, Anilocra, Lironeca and so
on. These are all anagrams of a "Carolina", the name of a lady friend.
