NFC: Fw: [Updates] HELP HOLD FEDERAL AGENCIES ACCOUNTABLE TO WATER POLLUTION LAWS!
HELP HOLD FEDERAL AGENCIES ACCOUNTABLE TO WATER POLLUTION LAWS!
It is time to close the legal loophole that allows the federal government
violate the Clean Water Act with immunity. Representative Charlie Norwood
(R-GA) and Senator Paul Coverdell (R-GA) have introduced legislation
at ending this injustice and hold federal agencies accountable to water
Currently, the Federal Pollution Control Act allows federal agencies
facilities without having to control or reduce polluted discharges or
run-off as the private sector is required to do. As a result, the General
Accounting Office estimates that federal facilities are guilty of twice
many environmental violations as the private sector.
The Federal Facilities Clean Water Compliance Act of 1999 (H.R. 2449 and
669) enjoys broad support, including:
· Bipartisan Congressional support;
· The Clinton Administration, as stated in a recent Senate hearing by a
senior representative of the Environmental Protection Agency.
· The Association of States Attorneys General; and
· American Rivers and other conservation groups.
If this bill is to pass, we must demonstrate to Congressional leadership
that it is a priority by gathering as many endorsements and co-sponsors
possible. Together, we can stop the federal government from being the
largest water polluter in the nation.
