Worm bedding

This last weekend I tried a small container with shredded newspaper as
bedding and put in about 10 worms.
Within 24 hours they were all dead. Either the ink killed them or the
sudden change from a peat medium to newspaper (different acidity ?)
Any ideas.
The corrugated cardboard test seems to be working but the buggers hide
inside the corrugations so are difficult to see and get at.
