I believe that daphnia shells are silicate rather than calcium carbonate
or sulphate however calcium is a nutrient required by all organisms. I
also suspect daphnia can tolerate a range of pH. Nevertheless, lime is
recommended with manure cultures to keep the pH at a tolerable level.
