[Live-foods] White worms

I am having an awful time cultivating whiteworms.  I wouldn't even  bother 
with them, since grindals are so easy to raise and harvest, except we  have an 
exotic newt that prefers them over anything else.  I keep them cool  on the 
floor next to an exterior door.  The last batch has started to  accumulate gritty 
granules all over the media and the interior box  surface.  Are these eggs? 
droppings?  Any help or advice would be  appreciated.
