Clams are filter feeders. They filter organisms from the water. They don't eat solid food. When I was younger and couldn't afford a "real" filter, I'd put one or two black mussels into my 20 gallon tank when it began to get a little cloudy. They'd clear it up in a day or two, at which time I'd put them back into their pond. Good luck!
