Chlorox
Hi All,
Chlorox brand bleach is a 5.25% solution of Sodium Hypochlorite
and is typically used as a household bleach here in the USA (and
elsewhere ??). It is quite alkaline (has a high pH) and for
those with acidic water it would increase the pH to the levels
that artemia are found in in nature. (Brine shrimp eggs do not
hatch well in acidic water). My water here in central New Mexico
has a pH of 8.3 with a hardness of about 50 ppm out of the tap.
The source is local wells (not the Rio Grande River). I add 98
grams (about 3.5 oz.) of pickling salt per gallon to my water and
get virtually 100% hatches from Great Salt Lake shrimp eggs in
about 36 hours at 75 F.
If one used Chlorox to hatch shrimp eggs, I would strongly advise
washing them with tap water before feeding to fish since it
breaks down to sodium hydroxide and chlorine with time.
