Belly sliders are fry, who's swim bladders do not function properly. They
can not achieve neutral buoyancy so they end up either hopping around the
tank or just sliding from one place to another. This is, unfortunately, a
more common condition than many of us would like. I see this very often
with my annual fry. Often more than 50% of them never swim. With annuals
it can occur if the eggs mature too quickly and are not hatched in time.
This summer my apartment was warm and many of my eggs matured more quickly
than expected. The problem does exist with non annuals as well but it is
much less prevalent (in my case anyway).
