Killie ponds
Hello All,
Just wanted to share my experience with ponds, a neighbor of mine has a pond
that is about 500 gallons. I purchased some Flag fish in a LFS last year which
did not do much for me so in they went. Well I looked in the pond yesterday and
saw half a dozen swimming around. This pond has been set up for 20 years and
has only been drained a few times and at the deep end (5 feet) there is about 3
feet of mud in which resides the biggest Hellbender I have ever seen. It has
been there about 20 years also. The majority of the fish are Mosquito fish but
there are also four 8" Goldfish, a few gold colored minnows (my contribution
again),and some Lima's (livebearers), that I just added and some Pupfish. This
pond has no filtration and all of the fish are extremely healthy. The eat
whatever falls in the pond and the only food they get is half a can of Vets
brand dog food that my neighbors wife tosses in to feed the Hellbender every
few days. BTW, the Hellbender was given to Arizona State University as part of
a pair and when their usefulness was over into the pond they went. This guy is
probably over 2 feet long and when we drain the pond this fall I will get to
see just how long he is. Anyway any interesting killies that I come across in
the future just may find their way into the pond.
