Re: Roloffia
Roloffia as a generic name was rejected for a very sound reason. The
emotional arguments notwithstanding, the fish in the subgenera
Scriptaphyosemion (roloffi, liberiense, cauvetti, et al) and
Archiaphyosemion(maeseni, jeanpoli) are sufficiently different to warrant
generic status, and that will happen soon. Also, Fundulopanchax may soon hit
the scrap heap, or at least be severely gutted. In talking to Ken Lazara at
the national, he mentioned that, due to DNA studies, batesii is going to be
called Aphyosemion again in the new KMI. A. scheeli is being moved to
Fundulopanchax, I believe in Paraphyosemion. Many have long felt that it
LOOKS very similar to gardneri. All this name shuffling means nothing to
hobbyists who have no interest in nomenclature, but is fascinating to me to
see the relationships being determined by DNA studies. Another person active
in this field feels that Diapteron is genetically closest to Kathetys, which
nobody could determine by visual clues. Brad
