Re: collecting natives
Hi Gary, I collected pumpkinseed sunfish in So. Tennessee, along with a ton
of darters which lived in very shallow gravel bottom creeks. Very easy to
catch with a seine or a dipnet. Keep them as cool as you can, a little ice
in the cooler with them, a battery operated air pump, and some cool water
from the source for a change when you are half way home. Not a problem.
There are at least a dozen species of very colorful darters in the Tennessee
River drainage area. I only collected in the southern part of the state.
Watch out for water moccasins. They hang in the trees above the water, and
despite what anyone may tell you, they WILL MOST DEFINITELY CHASE YOU. Not
very far, but if you are motivated by fear, you will find out how fast you
can really move. Call me if you want some good spots in So. Tenn. along Rt.
