proxy bidding
Regarding the thread about proxy bidding at the annual Convention, that was
exactly what the host club provided to the members unable to attend, back
when I joined (1973). The practice was continued into the early 80's at
least before the clubs gave it up. It was not a really major item, but did
help out the members that couldn't make it to the Convention.
All that is involved is for the host club to provide one member to receive
the bids in the mail and bid on the appropriate fish when (if) they came
up in the auction. It didn't even have to be a member of the host club -
just someone to handle the bidding who was familiar with killies. The only
problems that occurred were:
- The bidding was started at the highest proxy bid price rather than
starting low and possibly getting the fish for less.
- The proxy bidder would just bid on a species/location without previously
having checked on the quality of the entry. This would periodically
result in over-the-hill or sickly fish being bought and shipped to the
proxy bidder.
If these problems could be ironed out,it might be worthwhile to try out
proxy bidding for a couple of Conventions to see how it works out. There
was never a question of it being too much work for the host club in the
past. It was an expected aspect of the Convention.
