Re: Aplocheilus panchax - subspecies
Dear Konstantin Shidlovsky, According to Wildekamp in "A World of Killies"
subspecies of Aplocheilus panchax are not recognized, esp on the basis of
color alone. theree color varieties in males specimens is know from the
Calcutta in NE India where they were collected (and comprise the majority of
aquarium strain fish) in 1991 1992. These colors are white, yellow and red,
with and without red spoots on the sides. All variations may occur within a
single population. Other authorities describe several subspecies. I fear DNA
studies, at least, will be required to solve this problem. The field of
taxonmy continues to change and this species need further work.
It is a beautiful fish with subtle colors, so enjoy it. You may decide to
concentrate on certain phenotypes for amusement.
Yours, Harry
