Mike, I use to do my cultures this way, but I made a little modification.
I add a tablespoon of sugar in a gallon jar of apple cider vinegar/water
mixture (1:1) and skip the apple pieces. The apples seem to deteriorate
and cloud the culture. I have more than I need.
