Rather then adding baking soda to your water to increase the pH, get a
baby food jar and fill in with dolomite or crushed coral. This will
naturally buffer your water up in pH and hardness rather then adding
chemicals to your tank which is only a temporary solution. This works
very well for me and I also use it in my livebearer tanks as well. My
tap water is 7.0 and 60ppm hardness with no buffering capability and
inside of a few weeks the pH drops down to the 6.0 to 6.5 range.
