Fungus-Eggs
It is always frustrating to pick a nice batch of fertile eggs from a map only
to have them go bad due to fungus. Much of this can be avoided if the eggs are
place on top of damp peat moss. Boil the peat first. Place the damp peat moss
into a petri dish, pack it in tightly making a smooth surface. Place the eggs
on the damp peat moss so that they do not touch each other. Put the lid on
after this and check the eggs every day or two and remove those that are no
fertile or have gone bad. I have experienced very few loses using this method
as long as bad eggs are removed and the the peat remains moist and kept at a
reasonable temperature- 67-80 degrees F. It is necessary to get the eyed-up
eggs into hatching water when they are ready, otherwise they will hatch onto
the peat and perish. But there are usually several days when the window of
hatching opportunity is present.
