Agreed. I frequently work with databases and one thing I abhor is when
folks try to embed special meaning in a numbering system. My suggestion
was based upon the idea that all country codes would be consistent and
one would not have to know that Seeger's "TZ" is Tanzania, and Watters
"TAN" is Tanzania. So one could assertain some information about the
collection without know or having to look up specific collector's naming
conventions.
To your credit, "TAN" is fairly easy to guess, but would still need
knowledge regarding the collector to vallidate the country of origin with
any certainty. Other collector's naming conventions are not so easily
followed or understood.
Of course, the closest I've ever come to collecting was hooking panfish
from a rowboat with worms and a hook. So I must really defer to those
with real experience, such as yourself, to determine what's the best
solution. But, I will add that as a relative newbie (only 2 yrs. experience
to date), maintaining accurate location codes is easy as I only need copy
what's on the bag. But the current syntax makes it more difficult to
understand and learn more about the fish. Fortunately, we have the
email lists for us to ask the right questions from the right experts <S>.
