I can see the advantage of building a large tank from plywood. But I
wonder if it would be better to simply build a shelf for killie tanks. Or
maybe a combination of both. The divided tank idea may be restrictive
for breeding certain killies. A shelf with small tanks can be included in
the central system if desired, or they can be selectively removed. This
would give you better control over special water perameters if needed.
It also would be easier to clean, especially if you're working with peat
spawners.
Also, as for the central sump, I've been toying with an idea of building
one out of a large plastic storage bin. Again, this or something similar
may be easier to work with to clean and maintain. I drew up a
suggested plan that I've posted on my web site under tropical fish
resources. Please note that I have not tried this design yet.
