Have you built plywood aquariums? I have found  that using "plywood core sign
board, coated both sides" is superior to A-C, A-B, or marine plywood. The
extra cost is partly offset by the fact that you get much better coverage with
your paint and 2 phase epoxy paint is expensive. The surface is very smooth so
you get an excellent finish. Sign board also can be had with a waterproof
formica-like coating. This requires no paint; glue, screw, and then seal the
seams with a bead of aquarium sealant. Sign board is also much stiffer and
flatter than plywood if coated both sides. You may have difficulty finding the
right lumber yard. It is a specialty item. Billboards are made from it, but it
can be special ordered if you have a good, cooperative lumber yard. 

Suggestions: Make your designs modular so they can be moved, rearranged,
carried up and down the stairs, etc. A sump on the floor can also serve as an
aquarium base. Some storage compartments here and there are handy.
