help identify an interloper

Last night I noticed a couple of worms (?) swimming in a gravel
bottomed, heavily planted tank in which I keep Roloffia sp. Guinea. The
critters, of which I only saw two in about fifteen minutes of observing,
are about 1/4 inch (6mm) long, very thin (hairlike), and white. They swam
from the bottom to the top in undulating, s-shaped fashion and then
swam around at the surface. They seem to have a head, although I only
say this because they swam exclusively in one direction, and not
because I could see a head. One was eaten by a killie when spotted.
They are not planaria, I've seen those. What are these things? Are they
harmful? Can/should they be eradicated? In short, what's the lowdown?

Thanks in advance for any help.

John Ely
