I use 1 tsp for a bucket of water. You can leave the plants in the bucket for
anything between 20 minutes to a couple of hours. Although I wouldn't
recommend sterilizing fragile plants with Alum. If found that the stuff
damaged my plants more than the snails did! Rather make sure you buy from a
reputable Pet Shop with 'clean' tanks or quarantine the plants for a couple of
weeks in a separate tank with no fish. Thus, killing any pathogens that may be
lurking... If you're worried about snail eggs there is no real sure fire way
of getting rid of the critters but I found that the quarantine system works
well - as soon as you notice any tiny snails crawling on the glass remove the
plants and scrutinize them for snails.
Alum can be bought from any Chemist/Drug store, usually in large Crystals, and
is very cheap!
