In my experience, tropical lilies have flowers that are raised out of the
water (maybe a foot or a bit less) while the 'hardy' ones tend to have
their flowers on the surface.
Tropical lilies also seem to be more prone to being purple or blueish while the
typical hardy lily is usually white, pink or yellow.
Just my thoughts...
