Re: KillieTalk Digest V2 #337 Hydra
I found this in the June archives of Killie talk. I don't know if this is
the best way to go about eradicating Hydra but since everyone seems to be
mentioning it, I thought that I would copy and paste. I'm not sure who the
original author is ,as only an address was listed on the thread ((Document
link not converted)mfjacobs at geocities_com)

Fred.......and his hydra. Folks I have had the hydra plague, off and
on, as well over the past 2 years, and there is a solution. I got this
solution from Earle Fisher.....a great killi man from Ft Lauderdale
Fl.....when he told it to me I scoffed at him and tried all of the
chemicals known to man. I tried all of the gouramies in the world and
everything else but Earle's treatment. Finally I gave in and had a bit
of bad luck with the inital treatment and then was forced to try the
treatment a second and third and fourth time over the years. It
works....although it seems a "golden touch" is helpful.
TREATMENT........a 9 volt lantern battery (about the size of putting
your two fists together...maybe they are 6 volts?....no matter). Cut a
length of old extension cord wire (2 wires conntcted) to about 8-12
inches....strip all ends to about1 1/2 inches. Connect one of the
striped end to the negative and one to the positive so that if you take
the other end of the wire and touch the ends it would complete the
circut....take thwe battery to the aquarium and lower the ends of the
wire into the water...........believe me it will NOT hurt the fish......
and just let the current go through the tank. After about 10-15+
minutes you will see the hydra balled up instead of their tnetacles
being out looking for food.......when you see that leave it in the tank
for another say 5 minutes, remove the wires and done deal. In the
morning ALL of the hydra will be gone and the fish will not have skipped
a beat. By the way ONE of the ends of the copper wire will be visibly
reduced in size....you chemical people do you think it is the copper in
solution or the current....or both??
The problem I had originally was that I left the wire in for about
1 1/2 HOURS.......I forgot what time Earle had said. The tank's
bio-system crashed....the fish didn't die, the water just got cloudy
like the "new tank syndrome". A couple of days, with water changes and
"old" seeded sponge filters and the tanks were as good as new.
When you are done either go to another tank or put the battery on
the shelf making sure the wires don't touch and I have used the same
battery maybe 12-15 times over the last year.....as time goes on it
seems to take a little extra time to do the job....but the battery will
last longer than you can imagine. Folks TRUST ME! I've done this on
the most expensive apisto's and killies I have and I don't even think
about harming the fish...........if there is a fish that is botherd by
this system I don't know about it.
Have a real good day!
Mike

As far as the chemistry goes, I believe that the positive lead is losing
copper ions and they are, in turn, being electroplated onto the negative
lead. Some percentage of the ionic copper is most likely staying in the
water so a water change after this procedure would be an obvious
precaution.
