Convention tank setup
Hi - I've tried to send this message several
times, but something has gone wrong each time. I will try one last time, having
re-entered the address in my address book.
Speaking for the membership of UNYKA, the
nice comments about the fish survival are greatly appreciated. This was one of
our major priorities in hosting the convention. I think that there were several
factors involved in keeping the fish healthy. The first is that the water we
used was from a municipal system that produces very good water. The second is
that we tried to set up the tanks well in advance of putting in the fish so that
the water was at room temperature and had stabilized to a reasonable degree. All
water was filtered through a particulate filter and a carbon filter. The same
type that is used for households, a double canister system (Sear's best). The
hoses were of food quality, not garden hoses. As Ted mentioned, the water was
put into large, brand new plastic garbage cans that I had conditioned for
several weeks (water, salt and time in the sun). And finally, probably the most
important factor was that we limited the people that were allowed in the fish
room to just our members to give us control on what was going on. Ted ran the
show. He controlled the putting of the fish in the tanks as well as the
conditioning of the tanks. He spent a lot of hours taking care of the fish and I
think that he and the rest of the UNYKA members did an outstanding job. The
bottom line is that you have to have the right people to make something like
this work.
