I now appreciate that this is problem that some people don't want. Anonymity
therefore is a necessary option. It is not a big deal for those on-line to
just reply to an e-mail and say no! But, for those who are deluged with
letters, the response would be a big chore. I have not had an overwhelming
number of requests since I posted my list. Most of those exchanges were
successful and rewarding for both parties. Of course, while my list of killies
is fairly large it is mostly the common species and would not provoke the
response that a listing of rare and new species might. The problem with
anonymous listings would be that there would need to be someone who keeps
track of the lister, just so they could have editorial privileges. More work
for someone!
My big reason for proposing something on-line, is the experience I've had
which shows that most people seem to be more willing to send an e-mail than to
send a real USPS letter. [Tom, how many people have registered their fish with
the Species Maintenance Committee?] Certainly, I am a better correspondent,
even with my own family, via e-mail than by regular mail or telephone.
